Our neighbors across the road have their heroes – Montana, Young, Rice, Garcia, Kaeperknick, etc. But we have our own band of brothers and sisters who have performed at the highest level during our tenure at Candlestick. Pontoni – WC in ’97, Brent Prenzlow from SoCal was our first champ in 2004, followed by Aaron O’Dell, Andy Jacques-Maynes, Justin Robinson, with Gina Hall, Carmen D’Aluisio, Karen Brems, Shelley Olds, Barbara Howe taking ‘Stick titles.
We have used this former landfill on the edge of SF Bay over 15 times since 2004, through dry years as well as the rare, memorable wet and gooey seasons. This course is home to thousands of resident ground squirrels who disappear for race weekends only to reappear on Mondays to rebuild their burrow entrances that we’ve leveled to smooth out a notorious bumpy course – when it’s dry. Opening day for the 2013 Season (Saison Onze or Seizoen Elf) is going to see our traditional counter clockwise direction after the Start. It’s also a modified 1st lap to take competitors safely onto the course before they tackle the Summit Bikes “Bridge of Sighs” for the first time on Lap #2. And just like our other venues, all of them at the edge of the Bay, we’re taking you almost to the tideline before you return to dry land. Maybe we should call this the “Bay Edge Super Prestige” cyclocross?
And sometime in 2014 we’ll also witness the end of our neighbors when they blow up the stadium, Niners head south to their new techno toy home in Santa Clara – and we have the place all to ourselves.

Cyclocross racers in Northern California have selected their own race categories for decades before USA Cycling discovered the phenomena a few years ago. We still encourage riders to discover for themselves their best fit for competition. Is your first choice too slow? too fast? Too young? Too old? Go ahead and change whenever you want. For those of you looking for more direction, our corresponding categories with USAC are:
Beginner – Cat. “C” – USAC Cat. 4
Intermediate – Cat. “B” – USAC Cat. 3
Advanced – Cat “A” – USAC Cat. 1/2
